Editorial Policy
How we research, write, review and update every page on this site, and what we do when we get something wrong.
Our mission
People usually look for a loan when money is tight and time is short. Our job is to explain each loan option in plain English, show the real cost before anyone borrows, and keep that information accurate as rates, terms and laws change.
Who reviews our content
How a page is made
1. Research
We start from primary sources: loan agreements and rate sheets from our lending partners, federal guidance from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and state lending regulators.
2. Write
Editors explain how each product works, who it suits, what it costs and how it compares with alternatives such as payday loans and credit card cash advances. We use worked examples with real numbers instead of vague claims.
3. Financial review
A consumer credit reviewer recalculates every rate, fee, monthly payment and total cost, and tests our calculators against standard amortization formulas.
4. Compliance review
A compliance reviewer checks that rates, terms and representative examples are disclosed clearly and that nothing implies guaranteed approval.
5. Ongoing updates
Pages are re-reviewed when a lending partner changes rates or terms, when a relevant law changes, and at least every six months. Each page shows the date it was last updated.
Sources we rely on
- Loan agreements, rate sheets and Truth in Lending disclosures from our lending partners
- Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (consumerfinance.gov)
- Federal Trade Commission consumer guidance (consumer.ftc.gov)
- State banking and financial regulators
- The three national credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion
Reviews and testimonials
We do not write, buy or edit borrower reviews. Themes we summarize from public review sites are labeled with their sources and review date. Verified borrower reviews are published unedited, positive or negative.
Corrections
If you spot an error, email [email protected] with the page address and what needs fixing. We review every report within two business days and update the page, including its last-updated date, when a correction is needed.
How we're paid
We are compensated by our lending partners when a loan is funded. Compensation does not affect what our editors write, which products we explain, or the rates and terms disclosed in your loan agreement.
